Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in College Counseling

The student population is more diverse than ever before and yet, mental health counselors are still majority white and female. We surveyed counseling center directors to understand the state of diversity in college counseling – and found that only 44% felt the diversity of their providers was reflective of their student body.

In our new resource, we reveal our survey results on provider demographics, the hardship of hiring and retaining diverse providers, and the best ways to close diversity gaps, as well as:

  • Reasons to move beyond cultural competency
  • Ways to expand your mental health offerings
  • Recommendations for building a more inclusive center

We know college counseling centers are battling long wait lists, limited resources, provider shortages, burnout, and gaps in clinical experience, but actionable steps can still be taken.
